Chinese (Mandarin)

Chinese (Mandarin) for Beginners

​Day/Time: Tuesday 6:30-8:00pm; Saturday 10:30am-2:30pm

Duration: 10 weeks

After a term of beginner's lessons you will find yourself familiar with basic grammar, a decent amount of vocabulary and commonly used daily phrases. The class will focus on developing listening and speaking skills of the learners. Basic Chinese characters (simplified), as well as Pinyin, the Chinese language sound system, will be introduced.

Adult Students

The intermediate/improvers course is designed for students who have completed the beginner's study or achieved the same level through other forms of study. By the end of the course, students will be able to understand the main ideas of a complex text, have more vocabulary and be able to apply more grammar. We will work to improve Chinese language skills of the learners in respect to listening, speaking, reading and writing.

French

This French for Beginners course is based on a communicative approach and will provide learners with the tools and confidence to have basic conversations with French speakers. A wide range of resources, oral and written will be used, including everyday French documents such as restaurant menus, songs, movie extracts and short texts. Learners will take part in activities, conversations and role plays and will have the opportunity to do projects on themes that particularly interest them. All activities are aimed at developing French communication skills.

 

Areas covered include greeting someone, talking about yourself and relatives, ordering a meal, asking for items and prices, asking for directions, and discussing your hobbies and tastes in life. By the end of this course, you will be able to understand basic questions in French; have short conversations with a French speaker, using appropriate greetings, write short texts (such as presentations or emails), and utilise and improved knowledge of French culture (ways of life in France, food, cinema, etc.). The tutor uses learner-centred approaches, and will always be attentive to your needs and expectations.

This improvers' course is designed for students who already have a basic grasp of French and who want to improve their communication skills and delve deeper into the use of the language. You will study using videos and articles from the French media, along with a range of other resources, and gain a better understanding of French language and culture. You will also do activities and projects where you will be able to interact and express yourself (employing the structures learned during the course) and talk about themes that interest you.

 

By the end of the course you will be able to talk confidently about events, express your opinions and tastes, plan projects, give advice and negotiate. The tutor will always be attentive to your needs and expectations.

Japanese

Participants will become familiar with basic Japanese grammar, a decent amount of vocabulary and commonly used daily phrases. We will introduce Kanji, Chinese characters in Japanese language and focus on developing listening and speaking skills.

This Spanish for Beginners course is based on a communicative approach and will provide learners with the tools and confidence to have basic conversations with Spanish speakers. Students will take part in activities where they will practise their speaking and listening skills.

 

By the end of this course students will be able to use appropriate greetings, talk about themselves and their families, ask for and give personal information, discuss their hobbies and tastes, talk about their interests and future plans.

Format: In person

 

This Spanish for Improvers is designed for those who completed Level 1 or already have some knowledge of the language.

The course is based on a communicative approach and will provide learners with the skills to have more complex interactions with Spanish speakers. Students will take part in activities where they will practise their speaking and listening skills.

 

By the end of this course students will be able to interact confidently in different environments where they will be using the vocabulary and grammar structures learned in class.
