Students will need a basic sewing kit and a kitchen scissors or blade for the first few weeks.

Being able to use a sewing machine an advantage but not a requirement.

Materials: A crochet hook (4mm, 4.5mm or 5mm) and wool if desired.  Double knit recommended with size 4.5mm hook.

Course Details: 

Each student needs to bring their own sewing machine and tools since these are not provided by the school.

 

Materials required:

Sewing machine 

Scissors for fabric and for paper

Pins

Sewing machine needles

Measuring tape

Seam ripper

Water-soluble markers

Thread

30+ cm ruler

Pencil and eraser.

 

Every project will require a type of fabric of certain length and probably other materials. The teacher will discuss this in class.

Course Details:

Our beginners sewing class teaches basic sewing machine skills.  This craft based class will help you fall in love with your sewing machine while creating easy craft items such as bags, scrunchies, cushion covers, etc.  Bring your own sewing machine as well as all accessories.  You will also need thread, scissors, seam ripper, pins etc.  Have fun and learn a new skill.  No need to bring any fabric to the first class.

Duration: 10 weeks

Tutor: Valerie O’Donoghue

​Format: In person

Course Details: 

During this course you will upholster a piece of furniture under the guidance of Valerie O’Donoghue. Valerie has many years’ experience in both furniture design and restoration.

 

Students bring in their furniture and it is assessed by Valerie. For beginners it is advisable to start with something small like a dining chair either with springs, foam or a drop in seat.

 

Valerie will help you to learn essential upholstery skills at your own pace with advice on basics such as using tools and choosing the right stitches and textiles and in doing so complete your project.

 

Materials/equipment required: tack lifter, tack hammer, stapler, 10mm staples, webbing, hessian, foam, horsehair, calico, twine, scissors, pencil and a dressmaker’s measuring tape.

 

Class size is limited to just 10, ensuring that you receive all the tutor guidance that you require, but because of the small class numbers, places are likely to fill up quickly. Book early to avoid

disappointment.

Woodturning 

Wood Curving

Woodturning (Beginners)

Course Commencement: 13.01.25 & 15.01.25

Day/Time:  7:30-9:30pm

Monday & Wednesday - (Suitable for Beginners)

Duration: 10 weeks

Tutor: Graham Brislane

Fee: €160

​Format: In person

1 Lathe per student

Maximum 9 students per class.
Bring:

Notepad, pen & pencil.
 

Each week a new project will be demonstrated and students then make their own piece. A
project sheet will also be provided each night. As students work the tutor will circulate to
advise and answer any questions.

 

The tutor will describe and demonstrate the correct use of various Woodturning tools and chisels as the weeks progress, including tool sharpening.
 

All materials such as wood (pre-cut to size), abrasives and finishing waxes / polishes are supplied at an extra cost of €30.00 each, payable to the tutor early in the term.
 

Depending on how course nights fill up, experienced turners will be catered for, but with
possibly less time compared to a Thursday night.

Carpentry Work

Woodturning (Experienced)

Course Commencement: 16.01.25

Day/Time: Thursday 7:30-9:30pm

(Suitable for students who have completed the Beginners course before).

Duration: 10 weeks

Tutor: Graham Brislane

Fee: €160

​Format: In person

1 Lathe per student.

Maximum 9 students per class.
Bring: Notepad, pen &  pencil.


Projects are more advanced than those in the Beginners course, with a higher concentration on Faceplate turning and the use of Chucks.  As students work the tutor will circulate to advise and answer any questions.
 

The tutor will demonstrate each project and provide a project sheet. Some projects will take two nights to complete.
 

All materials are provided at an extra cost, up to a value of €30.00 each, payable to the tutor. Each week a note will be kept of material costs and students will be advised of the final charge, towards the latter end of the term.
 

Depending on how course nights fill up, beginners will be catered for, but with possibly less time compared to a Monday or Wednesday night.

Day/Time: Tuesday & Thursday 7:30-9:30pm

Duration: 10 weeks

​Format: In person

This course covers basic hand tools and power tools and the basic skills required to build a tool box.  Students with more experience may select a more difficult project on discussion with the tutor.

All materials such as wood are supplied at an extra cost of approx. €30.00 each, payable to the tutor early in the term.
