Art Course
Art: The Basic Elements of Art through Painting

St. Tiernan’s Community School Adult Art Class welcomes everybody from complete beginners who've never held a paintbrush, to more intermediate painters who want to hone their skills. Over a course of eight weeks of classes, we aim to explore and gain a deeper understanding of the fundamental elements of art.   We will explore colour theory to tone, composition, line, shape, and form. Using acrylic paint students will also learn different painting techniques, from applying washes, building up tone, using texture and dry brushing, we will develop a solid foundation while gaining a deeper mastery of the process and art-making. In a warm and nurturing environment, students will get plenty of individual tuition and support to help develop their own personal style, with lots of scope for individual projects and subject matter including still life, landscapes, and portraits.

List of Materials for Basic Elements of Art through painting

  • Acrylic colour tubes – the recommended brands are Reeves or Daler Rowey, Amsterdam Winsor & Newton 75ml - in the following colours: Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow, Magenta (crimson), Cyan Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White, OR acrylic painting sets primary colours with white.

  • An assortment of different size brushes for painting in acrylic (e.g. Pointed and round brush #4.#8, #10 or paintbrush set example round head  which can be purchased at Mr Price or Deals.

  • Pencil.

  • Eraser.

  • Pencil sharpener.

  • Paint pallet for mixing paint.

  • Paper towel/ J cloths.

  • An A4 Acrylic Pad or paper treated/entitled for painting in Acrylic.

  • Canvas/canvas boards (assorted sizes) for more finished pieces (can be purchased at Mr Price, EuroGiant, Tiger, Deals, etc).

Creative Writing Courses

Writing

Our writing course is tutored by Creative Writing graduate and published writer Robert Hopkins. We currently have courses for beginners and improvers

Creative Writing 1
Day/Time: Monday 7:30-8:30pm
Duration: 10 weeks
Tutor: Robert Hopkins
Fee: €100
Format: In person

This ten-week course is an introduction to the art of the short story and personal essay. Students will be familiarized with some of the finest examples from these short-form genres and learn the essential techniques and methods involved. The reading and production requirements for this class are light. Optional exercises are provided each week. Any work submitted will receive feedback and encouragement. The focus of this class is on understanding the basics of composition in fiction and non-fiction, what constitutes good style, and the fundamentals involved in editing one’s own work.

Writing with Pen

Creative Writing 2
Day/Time: Wednesday 7:30-8:30pm
Duration: 10 weeks

Format: In person

This ten-week course is an extension of the syllabus and foci of Creative Writing 1. Subjects previously touched upon are considered in depth and the core elements of fiction writing are examined through the lens of different genres. The work requirements for this class are moderate. Each class, apart from the first, will necessitate approximately two hours of reading. Over the ten-week period, students will be expected to submit two finished essays or stories which will be workshopped in class. Completion of Creative Writing 1 is usually a requisite for this course and graduates of that syllabus will receive preference in terms of placements.

Course Description
Learn and experience a wide range of topics
through twice monthly talks and experiences.
Topics covered range from gardening, the
environment, herbs and remedies, Irish history,
and genealogy. There are also periodic craft
demonstrations and activity nights which, in the
past, have covered everything from making
Easter cards, learning to play Whist and planting
seeds. Music and singing are also included
among our activities.
