Woodturning Courses

We currently offer three Woodturning courses for adults at St Tiernan's Community School in Dublin 16.

Woodturning (Tuesday)

Day/Time: Monday 7:30-8:30pm
Duration: 8 weeks
Tutor: Graham Brislane
Fee: €90
Format: Online

The tutor will commence by giving a short description of lathes and tools used. Different turning tools will be introduced and their correct use demonstrated throughout the course. A different project will be completed each week. These projects will be chosen to demonstrate the use of the tool(s) introduced that week. Sanding and adding a final wax or oil finish will also be covered, and types of timber used will be discussed as the course progresses. Students will have all their questions answered during the class, and each session will conclude with a question and answer section.

Example projects covered include: garden dibber, mallet, tool handle (bradawl), door wedges (offset turning), bud vase or t-light candle holders, box, Christmas decorations (split turning), bowl.

Woodturning (Wednesday) (not running this term)

Day/Time: Wednesday 7:30-9:30pm
Duration: 10 weeks
Tutor: Graham Brislane
Fee: €155

During this 10 week course, participants will learn the basic skill of turning. You will work on a variety of projects, making your own pieces. All skill levels are welcome, from those with absolutely no previous experience, to those who have been turning for a while and who would like to learn new skills. Since there will be one lathe per student, you will have plenty of hands-on practice and ample tutor attention. This also allows you work at your own pace. You will make a variety of items using a range of techniques. Typical items made include candlesticks, baby rattles, doorstops, table lamps, decorative mushrooms, eggcups, tealight holders, bowls and kitchen roll holders.

Materials (wood etc.) are not included in the cost of the course. Students can bring their own wood, or we can supply it for an additional fee. Cost will not be more than €25. As woodturning produces sawdust and chippings old clothes should be worn.

Class size is kept small so that everyone has access to a lathe. Please book early to avoid disappointment.

Woodturning (Thursday) (not running this term)

Day/Time: Thursday 7:30-9:30pm
Duration: 10 weeks
Tutor: Graham Brislane
Fee: €155
