Music Instrument Courses

Learn how to play a music instrument with our acoustic guitar and ukulele courses for beginners and imporvers.

Acoustic Guitar (Beginners)

Day/Time: Tuesday 8:30-9:30pm
Duration: 10 weeks
Tutor: Des Byrne
Fee: €100
Format: In person

This evening course is aimed at those who are new to the guitar and will cover the very basics. Participants will gain a solid foundation in guitar playing and learn chords shapes, strumming patterns and simple melodies and well known songs. This class is also a perfect refresher for those who have taken some lessons before, but have had time away from the instrument. Different genres, artists and styles will be covered each week.

Course materials will be provided in the form of handouts, so participants are asked to bring a folder to keep sheets in order. They should also bring their own guitar, picks and a capo if they own one. A small number of second-hand guitars will be available for the first two classes if anyone needs some time and advice before purchasing their own.

Acoustic Guitar (Improvers)

Day/Time: Tuesday 7:25-8:25pm
Duration: 10 weeks
Tutor: Des Byrne
Fee: €100
Format: In person

This course is the ideal follow on from the beginner's course, and will look at more intricate strumming patterns and some instrumental music. We will focus on playing in groups and tailoring lesson plans to suit varying levels of ability. Students will be encouraged to perform songs they have learned at home in front of the group and the class will provide feedback on how they can improve.  This course will also provide an introduction to music theory and how it can be applied to the guitar. As with the beginner's class, the syllabus is flexible and can be tailored to suit the musical tastes of the group.

The ukulele is a cheap instrument to purchase and a relatively easy one to master. These factors, along with the quirkiness of the music produced, contribute to the ever growing popularity.
