Mindfulness Classes

We've added a mindfulness course for Autumn 2022.

Introduction to Mindfulness

Day/Time: Monday pm
Duration: 8 weeks
Tutor:
Joel Whitman
Fee: €
Format: In person; will move online if restrictions imposed

Many of us move through moments of our day distracted, disconnected and dissatisfied. Unfortunately this anxious & stressed state has become our new normal. Mindfulness offers us a research-based approach that can help us to cultivate a healthier normal state, based on self-care & balance, calm & presence.

Course background
The Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programme was developed 40 years ago by Dr Jon Kabat-Zinn in response to this problem. Since then it has become the gold standard Mindfulness Introduction programme worldwide. The 8 week programme has been shown to be particularly beneficial for people dealing with stress and anxiety.

Course structure
The course is given in a safe & supportive online or in person environment over 8 consecutive weeks, and includes a mini-meditation retreat.
Each week builds upon the last, focussing on core mindfulness principles and foundational meditation techniques. Through practices, lessons, group discussions and experiential exercises we learn about stress reactivity & management.

Week 1: Introduction, Simple Awareness, Introduction to the Body Scan
Week 2: Attention & the Brain, Introduction to Sitting Meditation
Week 3: Dealing with Thoughts, Introduction to Mindful Movement
Week 4: Stress - Responding vs Reacting, 3-Step Breathing Space
Week 5: Dealing with Difficult Emotions & Physical Discomfort, Park Bench Meditation
Week 6: Mindfulness and Communication, Mountain Meditation
Week 7: Mindfulness and Compassion, Loving Kindness & Walking Meditation
Week 8: Conclusion, Developing a practice of your own

Key themes:
● How to actively & intentionally alleviate anxiety & stress.
● How to work with our thoughts & emotions & grow self-awareness.
● Learning to listen to the signals of the body & practise better self-care.
● Healthier strategies for working with life’s difficulties and challenges.
● Various ways we can integrate mindfulness practices into our daily lives.
● How to communicate more effectively and take better care of the people in our lives.
