QQI Level 5 Care of the Older Person (component module 5N2706)
Day/Time: Wednesday 7:00-9:30pm

The purpose of the widely recognised and highly sought after level 5 award in Care of the Older Person is to equip learners with the knowledge, skill and competence to meet the full range of needs of older people in a variety of care settings. By the end of the course, participants will have gained an understanding of a range of age-related issues, including national and global demographic trends, healthy ageing, the normal psychological and physiological ageing process, attitudes towards ageing, and the social impact of ageing. They will gain an understanding of the role of the health care assistant, particularly in promoting positive attitudes to ageing. Preparation for retirement will also be covered.
Learners can also expect to explore the physical, emotional, social, psychological, financial, recreational, environmental and spiritual needs of the older person. Issues relating to living with mental illness, dementia and chronic illness will be discussed. Upon completion of the course learners will be able to recognise the individual needs of the dying older person, and the special needs of their families. They will have knowledge of a range of educational, lifelong learning, leisure and retirement services available. They can also expect to be able to promote independence, empowerment, advocacy, dignity, individualised care, choice, self esteem and respect in the care of older persons, and their families.
Work Experience Requirements: Learners must complete a 40 hour work placement in a nursing home, hospital or day care centre.
Assessment/Examinations: Continuous assessment consists of a Project and Practical Skills Demonstrations. Learners must also complete 40 hours work placement.
