You can undertake the Level 5 and Level 6 component certificate courses in Special Needs Assisting (SNA) now at St Tiernan's Community School in Balally, near Dundrum. We are also running the level 6 Therapeutic Play Skills module.
QQI Level 5 Special Needs Assisting (component module 5N1786)
Day/Time: Tuesday 7:00-9:30pm
Duration: 10 weeks

The purpose of the widely recognised and highly sought after level 5 award in Special Needs Assisting is to equip learners with the knowledge, skill and understanding of the role of the Special Needs Assistant and promote good practice among those working in the education system. It is designed to meet the training needs of those volunteering or working as an SNA.
Learners will explore and examine: the role and responsibilities of a Special Needs Assistant; the skills and qualities required to carry out the role effectively; relevant disability legislation; how to relate appropriately with children with additional needs, their parents, teachers and primary carers; the rights of children with disabilities; and how to assist children with disabilities in a range of activities.
Entry Requirements: Minimum age is 17 Years. All learners must have a good standard of English. Currently the Department of Education and Science stipulates that all those gaining full-time employment in schools must have at least 3 passes at Junior Certificate or equivalent.
Continuous Assessment: Students are required to do a 30 Hour work experience during the course if they are not already working in the area.

The purpose of the level 6 Special Needs Assisting qualification is to equip the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence in the theory and practice underpinning the role of the SNA. Upon completion of this component module, the learner will be able to assist in the provision of education and care to those who present with special educational needs.
By the end of the course, learners will have gained a deeper understanding of the role of an SNA and understand the relevant theories, skills and processes required for curriculum implementation. They will have examined and assessed the provision of education in Ireland for individuals who present with special educational needs. Interventions and behaviour management techniques, individual education plans, stressors in the workplace, and personal reflection in relation to individual belief systems are also covered.
It is highly recommended that anyone that would like to work as an SNA has both the level 5 and level 6 awards in Special Needs Assisting.

It is particularly useful for those working with young children and adolescents in Early Years or Special Education settings. Learners will experience a combined learning experience which will enhance personal development while developing insight and awareness to the needs of all children. It is designed to introduce the learner to the field of Play Therapy.
Assessment/Examinations: Continuous assessment.
